Your first impression forms faster than you think. Even before you say anything, the other person unconsciously forms an image of who you are. During a job interview, your appearance therefore plays a bigger role than many people realize.
Research & psychology
Research within social psychology shows that people form a first impression within just a few seconds. Psychologist Nalini Ambady from Stanford University conducted extensive research on this and introduced the concept of āthin slicingā: the ability to draw reliable conclusions based on very brief observations.
Her studies show that these first judgments are often surprisingly accurate and largely unconscious. More time rarely changes this first impression, but mainly increases confidence in that judgment.
What does this mean for a job interview?
During a job interview, you want to come across as capable, trustworthy, and suitable. Because a first impression largely arises unconsciously, it helps to consciously respond to this with your choice of clothing. Not by being overdressed, but by choosing an outfit that fits the role and organisation.
The three styles
Corporate
For a corporate interview, a classic, plain suit is always the right choice. A wool blend suit in navy forms a strong base, but this model works just as well in grey or royal blue. These colours radiate calm and professionalism and fit within almost any formal work environment. Combine the suit with a light blue Blumfountain shirt for a fresh look. Complete the look with a smooth tan lace-up shoe and a royal blue tie, keeping the whole neat and balanced.
Business casual
Business casual is about looking well-groomed without becoming too formal. A grey jacket in linen look combined with a navy chino with texture creates a chic but approachable appearance. A white textured shirt keeps the look calm and professional. By choosing tan lace-up shoes and a leather belt in the same colour, the whole looks neat and well thought out. A dark blue tie or pocket square can make the outfit a bit more formal, but is certainly not required.
Smart casual
A smart casual look calls for calm and versatility. A light grey half-zip in merino blend combined with a brown chino gives a modern, well-groomed look without harsh contrasts. Wear a white shirt underneath for extra freshness. Depending on the setting, you can choose tan or black lace-up shoes. If you want to make the outfit a bit more formal for the interview itself, you can easily add a grey blend jacket, which immediately makes the look suitable for multiple occasions.
