Successful design by a Frenchman
It may sound strange, but in the past, there was no sportswear. Men wore a variant of a dress shirt when they played sports. For example, tennis was played until 1939 in a long-sleeved dress shirt. One Frenchman did not like that at all. You may know him. Of course, we are talking about René Lacoste, the inventor of the polo shirt. Initially, in 1933, he designed a sporty garment for himself with which he would henceforth play tennis. It was a tremendous success. In the first year the polo was sold, about 300,000 polos were produced. In a way, that is not so strange - just imagine playing sports wearing a dress shirt!
The polo shirts are still made today by the brand Lacoste. Since the Frenchman had the nickname 'le crocodile,' he decided that a crocodile was an ideal emblem for the real polos of Lacoste. However, they are no longer the only producer today.
