Upcoming Sunday, October 13th is ‘International Suit Up Day’. However, there is a chance you have no idea what this day stands for. Why was this day created, for example? What is the reason you should wear a suit on International Suit Up Day? GENTS brings you up to speed with this blog in just a few minutes. This way, you will soon know everything about International Suit Up Day!

It has already been a number of years since the series ‘How I Met Your Mother’ first aired on TV. If you don’t count reruns, it has been as much as 5 years since the last episode was broadcast. How I Met Your Mother started on September 19, 2005, and on March 31, 2014, the series ended. During this period, the series gained a huge number of loyal fans. In that respect, the series is comparable to the success that ‘Friends’ (1994 - 2004) achieved. But what does How I Met Your Mother have to do with International Suit Up Day? Everything!

Barney Stinson

As you might know, the group of friends central to this series contains all kinds of special, remarkable characters. One always steals the show, if you ask GENTS: Barney Stinson. This character loves being single, plays laser tag, and constantly picks up women. The most remarkable thing about Barney Stinson is that he almost always appears in a suit. Over 9 seasons of the series, there are only 18 scenes where the eternal bachelor is seen without a suit. Besides wearing a tailored suit, Stinson is also known for his iconic slogan “Suit Up!”. With it, he tries to encourage his friends to put on a tailored suit as well. So how is that slogan connected to International Suit Up Day?

International Suit Up Day thanks to HIMYM

You probably see it coming: fans of How I Met Your Mother have taken this world-famous quote from Barney Stinson and declared October 13 as ‘International Suit Up Day’. As a result, International Suit Up Day is essentially a tribute to the series, specifically to Barney Stinson. Since the series ended 5 years ago, the attention for International Suit Up Day has somewhat faded. That’s a bit of a shame, we at GENTS think. After all, nothing suits a man like a suit. Barney Stinson agrees: he wrote the song ‘Nothing Suits Me Like a Suit’ about it. So join in on International Suit Up Day too!
