Graduation
What do you wear to a graduation?
The short answer
At most Dutch universities, the doctoral candidate wears a tailcoat, and the paranymphs dress the same. Some universities also permit a morning suit or a dark suit; in Belgium, a dark suit is customary. Always check your university's protocol: whether you wear a white or black white tie waistcoat varies from place to place.
A graduation is a ceremony with its own dress code. If you're the graduate or paranymph, you're front and centre — you'll want to get it exactly right.

The tailcoat
Tailcoat, black trousers with braid, wing-collar dress shirt, white piqué bow tie and patent leather shoes. The waistcoat is usually white; some universities require black. Wear the waistcoat buttoned.
Graduate and paranymphs
The paranymphs dress the same as the graduate. If the three of you come to the store, we'll make sure the attire is right for all of you.
Morning coat or dark suit
At some universities, a morning coat or dark suit is permitted. Check your graduation regulations; if in doubt, the tailcoat is the safe choice.
