Successful Design by a Frenchman

It may sound strange, but there was no sportswear in the past. Men wore a variant of a shirt when they played a sport. Tennis, for example, was played until 1939 in a long-sleeved shirt. One Frenchman didn't like that at all. You might know him. We're talking, of course, about René Lacoste, the inventor of the polo shirt. Initially, in 1933, he designed a sporty piece of clothing for himself to play tennis in. It was a huge success. In the first year the polo was sold, approximately 300,000 polos were produced. In a way, that's not surprising – imagine playing sports in a shirt!

Polo shirts are still made by the Lacoste brand today. Since the Frenchman had the nickname 'le crocodile', he decided that a crocodile was an ideal trademark for authentic Lacoste polos. However, they are no longer the only producer.

When you wear a polo casually, you don't need to tuck the shirt into your trousers or button it up. On the other hand, it's neater to wear the polo that way when you're wearing trousers or chinos.
