What to wear to a gala?
The short answer
Check the invitation first. If it says black tie, wear a tuxedo with a black bow tie, a dress shirt and black patent leather shoes. If it says white tie, it's a tailcoat with white bow tie and white waistcoat. If it just says "gala", a tuxedo is almost always the right choice.
A gala is the moment to get it right. The dress code determines your outfit, and with a few fixed rules you'll always be correctly dressed — whether it's your first student gala or an official dinner.
Black tie: the tuxedo
A black tuxedo with pointed or shawl lapels, a white dress shirt, a black bow tie and black patent leather shoes. Wear the trousers with braces instead of a belt. A pocket square is fine, a necktie is not.
White tie: the tailcoat
The most formal outfit: the tailcoat with long tails, a dress shirt with wing collar, a white piqué bow tie and a white waistcoat that you wear buttoned. Underneath the black trousers with stripe and patent leather shoes.
Assemble everything at once
Build your tuxedo all at once: jacket, trousers, shirt and bow tie, each in your own size. If you already have one piece, simply skip it.

- What's the difference between black tie and white tie?
- Black tie is the tuxedo with a black bow tie. White tie is more formal: the tailcoat with tailcoat jacket, white waistcoat and a white bow tie.
- Can I wear a regular suit to a gala?
- Only if the invitation allows it, for example with "tenue de ville". For black tie or white tie, a tuxedo or tailcoat is required.
- Do I wear a belt with a tuxedo?
- No. Wear tuxedo trousers with braces; never wear a belt and braces together.
- Can I have my size measured in store?
