What to wear for a black tie dress code
By Maarten Verhoef

Formal menswear comes with various etiquette rules you must observe. Which etiquette applies depends on the dress code. If your invitation to a party mentions 'cravate noire', 'tuxedo' or 'esmoquin'? Then you are expected to dress according to the black tie dress code. GENTS explains today what the black tie dress code is, which etiquette rules apply and what you should wear—or rather, what you shouldn't. In short, this is what you wear to a black tie dress code!
Clothing in general is subject to regulations, but specific outfits may also have a dress code. This is particularly the case at formal events. Suppose you're invited to a gala, a wedding or a conference. There's a good chance a dress code will be mentioned. Both men and women must then follow specific etiquette that the outfit must meet. Generally, the black tie dress code is prescribed at events with a formal atmosphere taking place after six in the evening. But what is black tie?
The black tie dress code
For men, the etiquette of a black tie event differs from that for women. So we'll first cover the black tie dress code for men. We'll then also discuss what you should wear as a woman at this etiquette.
Men
As a man, you are expected to appear in a tuxedo. In other words, it is not acceptable to wear a black suit. No, you must wear a tuxedo. Moreover, that tuxedo must meet very specific etiquette rules that apply to the black tie dress code. The formal suit typically consists of a minimum of two, maximum three pieces. First, there is the tuxedo jacket, or dinner jacket. You recognise this jacket by its characteristic collar. Under the dinner jacket you naturally wear a shirt, but not just any shirt. Ideally you appear in a shirt with a wing collar complete with an iconic bow tie. You wear this of course with neat tuxedo trousers. Complete the outfit by wearing black patent leather shoes.

Women
Unlike men, women have somewhat more choice when it comes to an outfit that aligns with the black tie dress code. Virtually any long cocktail dress or evening gown is accepted. The only caveat is that the garment must have an elegant appearance. So preference goes to neutral colours. Avoid busy prints and bright colours. You're better off appearing in a dark blue or black evening dress. Find that too boring? Consider burgundy or deep purple. Furthermore, it's important that you keep the following points in mind when putting together your outfit:
- Always wear matching tights;
- Wear neat pumps;
- Avoid bold jewellery (keep it subtle);
- Bring a small clutch as your handbag.
What should you not wear to black tie?
Making a mistake is human, but if you wear an outfit that doesn't fit the etiquette, you commit a faux pas. That is a breach of the dress code. There are certain things you absolutely must not wear at a black tie event. First, it is forbidden to wear a watch. "Enjoyment knows no time" is the underlying thought. By wearing a watch with your tuxedo or evening dress, you commit a faux pas.
Beyond that, there are a few other breaches that women in particular can make. The freedom of choice of the black tie dress code for women thus has both advantages and disadvantages. For example, never wear sneakers under your dress (even if your dress is so long that you can't actually see the shoes). Furthermore, you should not wear a dress with a low neckline. Your décolletage may be visible, but in a tasteful manner. This dress code is all about refinement and a stylish appearance. Fortunately, thanks to GENTS you are now fully informed and will effortlessly steal the show at your next black tie event!
