What to wear to a job interview? Make the right first impression

Your first impression forms faster than you think. Before you have even said a word, the other person is unconsciously building a picture of who you are. In a job interview, your appearance therefore plays a bigger role than many people realise.

Research in social psychology shows that people form a first impression within seconds. Psychologist Nalini Ambady of Stanford University conducted extensive research on this and introduced the concept of 'thin slicing': the ability to draw reliable conclusions from very brief observations.

Her studies show that these first judgements are often surprisingly accurate and largely unconscious. More time rarely changes this first impression, but mainly increases confidence in that judgement.

What does this mean for a job interview?

In a job interview, you want to come across as competent, trustworthy and well suited to the role. Because a first impression is formed largely unconsciously, it helps to respond to this deliberately through your choice of clothing. Not by being overdressed, but by choosing an outfit that suits the position and the organisation.

The three styles

Corporate

For a corporate interview, a classic, plain suit is always the right choice. A navy wool-blend suit forms a strong foundation, but this model works just as well in grey or royal blue. These colours convey calm and professionalism and suit almost any formal working environment. Pair the suit with a light blue Blumfontain shirt for a fresh look. Finish the look with smooth tan lace-up shoes and a royal blue tie, keeping the whole polished and balanced.

Business casual

Business casual is about looking well groomed without becoming too formal. A grey linen-look blazer combined with navy textured chinos creates a chic yet approachable look. A white textured shirt keeps the look calm and professional. By choosing tan lace-up shoes and a leather belt in the same colour, the whole outfit looks polished and considered. A dark blue tie or pocket square can make the outfit slightly more formal, but is by no means a requirement.

Smart casual

A smart casual look calls for calm and versatility. A light grey merino-blend half-zip combined with brown chinos gives a modern, polished appearance without harsh contrasts. Wear a white shirt underneath for extra freshness. Depending on the setting, you can choose tan or black lace-up shoes.
