What to wear to a job interview? Make the right first impression

Your first impression forms faster than you think. Before you even speak, the other person unconsciously forms an image of who you are. During a job interview, your appearance therefore plays a larger role than many people realize.

Research in social psychology shows that people form a first impression within just a few seconds. Psychologist Nalini Ambady of Stanford University conducted extensive research on this and introduced the concept of 'thin slicing': the ability to draw reliable conclusions based on very brief observations.

Her studies show that these initial judgments are often surprisingly accurate and largely unconscious. More time rarely changes this first impression, but mainly increases confidence in that judgment.

What does this mean for a job interview?

During a job interview, you want to come across as competent, trustworthy and appropriate. Because a first impression is largely formed unconsciously, it helps to deliberately play into this with your clothing choice. Not by being overdressed, but by choosing an outfit that fits the role and organization.

The three styles

Corporate

For a corporate interview, a classic, solid suit is always the right choice. A wool blend suit in navy forms a strong foundation, but this model works equally well in grey or royal blue. These colours convey calm and professionalism and fit within virtually any formal work environment. Pair the suit with a light blue Blumfountain shirt for a fresh look. Complete the look with smooth tan oxford shoes and a royal blue tie, which keeps everything neat and balanced.

Business casual

Business casual is about looking polished without becoming too formal. A grey linen-look blazer combined with navy textured chinos creates a chic yet approachable appearance. A white textured shirt keeps the look calm and professional. By choosing tan oxford shoes and a leather belt in the same colour, the overall appearance looks polished and thoughtful. A dark blue tie or pocket square can make the outfit slightly more formal, but is certainly not required.

Smart casual

A smart casual look calls for restraint and versatility. A light grey half-zip in merino blend combined with brown chinos creates a modern, polished appearance without harsh contrasts. Wear a white shirt underneath for extra freshness. Depending on the setting, you can choose tan or black oxford shoes. If you want to make the outfit slightly more formal for the interview itself, you can simply add a grey blend blazer, which immediately makes the look suitable for multiple occasions.
