Buying a Men's Suit? Here's What to Look For

The fine weather is showing itself more and more, which means wedding season has begun! Most weddings take place when there's the best chance of good weather, namely between May and September. For such a special occasion as a wedding, of course, a perfectly tailored outfit is in order. If you don't yet have a fine men's suit, now is the time to buy one. What occasion are you buying the suit for?

Of course, weddings aren't the only occasion to wear a suit. A gala, job interview or funeral are also occasions where it's customary to wear a suit. When buying a men's suit, it's therefore good to consider the occasion for which the suit will serve. The dress code for a wedding is naturally different from that of a funeral. Buying a suit for the first time? Then it might be a good idea to buy a suit you can wear for multiple occasions. In that case, opt for versatile colours that are easy to combine, such as a solid navy suit or an anthracite-coloured suit. Navy and anthracite are suitable as a foundation for virtually any occasion.

What size should you have?

A men's suit should fit perfectly, so it's important that you have the right size. Have yourself advised by someone who knows what they're doing during fitting, or keep the following tips in mind when finding your perfect size:

The most important tip: Make sure the shoulder seam fits on your shoulders. The sleeve and trouser length can be easily adjusted by the tailor, but the shoulders are much trickier. The shoulder seam should fall exactly on your shoulders at the point where your shoulders transition into your arms. Is the shoulder seam of your jacket longer than your shoulders? Then go down a size. Is the shoulder seam shorter than your shoulders? Then go up a size.
Check that the jacket is wide enough by crossing your arms. Is the fabric pulling on your back? Then go up a size.

For the jacket length, it's nice if it just covers your seat. Don't let the jacket extend below that.

Make sure the waistband of the trousers isn't too tight. If the waistband is already snug when standing, it will pinch when sitting. The trousers should fasten easily.
