How to wear it
- A bow tie is essential for black tie, but a coloured or patterned bow tie looks equally refined with a blazer — or worn alone with a shirt.
- A bow tie should never be wider than your face: the points end approximately at the outer corners of your eyes.
- For black tie, wear black in the same fabric as your dinner jacket's lapels: silk with silk, grosgrain with grosgrain.
- With white tie (the tailcoat) you wear a white piqué bow tie, never a black one.
- Wear a bow tie with a spread collar or wing collar. With a wing collar, the collar points sit behind the bow tie.

- Adjust a pre-tied bow tie to your collar size before wearing.

How to tie it
The classic bow tie
It seems complicated, but it's the same knot as your shoelaces. Practice it once around your knee, and you'll master it at your neck.
- Place the bow tie around your neck with the left end approximately 4 cm longer than the right.
- Drape the long end over the short end and pull it up through the loop at your neck from below.
- Fold the short end in half to create a horizontal loop: this becomes the front of your bow tie.
- Let the long end fall straight down over the centre of that loop.
- Fold the long end in half and tuck it behind the front loop through the opening behind the knot.
- Gently pull both loops simultaneously and straighten your bow tie.

Preferably hand wash 100% silk in cold to lukewarm water (max. 30°C) with a silk or delicate detergent. If using the machine, select a delicate cycle at 20–30°C, place the item in a wash bag and set a low spin speed (max. 400–600 rpm). Wash inside out and with similar colours. Do not soak, wring or scrub; gently squeeze out the water.
Air dry silk. Do not tumble dry. Blot excess water with a clean towel and dry flat on a towel, or hang on a wide hanger. Dry away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Gently reshape while the fabric is still slightly damp.
Iron silk on low temperature (1 dot, approx. 110°C), preferably inside out. Use a pressing cloth and light pressure. A little steam is permitted, but keep the iron at a distance to prevent marks. Do not iron over wet patches and let the garment air first.

If you send it by post, please place the packing slip or a note with your order number in the box: without a return form, processing and refunding may take longer. Remove the old shipping label from the box, or make it completely unreadable, including the barcode. Otherwise DHL may send the parcel back to you. Register your return at gents.nl/retourneren.
- When will my order arrive?
- In Netherlands, your order usually arrives within 1–2 business days. Orders placed on working days before 23:59 are usually dispatched from our warehouse the same day; weekend orders are sent out on Monday.
