How to wear it
- A bow tie is essential for black tie, but a coloured or patterned bow tie looks equally refined with a blazer — or worn alone with a shirt.
- A bow tie should never be wider than your face: the points end approximately at the outer corners of your eyes.
- For black tie, wear black in the same fabric as your dinner jacket's lapels: silk with silk, grosgrain with grosgrain.
- With white tie (the tailcoat) you wear a white piqué bow tie, never a black one.
- Wear a bow tie with a spread collar or wing collar. With a wing collar, the collar points sit behind the bow tie.

How to tie it
The classic bow tie
It seems complicated, but it's the same knot as your shoelaces. Practice it once around your knee, and you'll master it at your neck.
- Place the bow tie around your neck with the left end approximately 4 cm longer than the right.
- Drape the long end over the short end and pull it up through the loop at your neck from below.
- Fold the short end in half to create a horizontal loop: this becomes the front of your bow tie.
- Let the long end fall straight down over the centre of that loop.
- Fold the long end in half and tuck it behind the front loop through the opening behind the knot.
- Gently pull both loops simultaneously and straighten your bow tie.

Preferably hand wash this 100% silk item in cold to lukewarm water (max. 30°C). Use a mild silk or wool detergent without enzymes. Turn inside out and wash briefly and gently. Do not soak, wring or scrub. Rinse with cold water. Do not use bleach or fabric softener. Prefer the machine? Choose the delicate/silk cycle at 20–30°C, low spin (max. 600 rpm) and place in a laundry bag.
Do not tumble dry silk. Gently press out the water and briefly roll in a towel. Then dry flat on a clean, dry towel or hang to drip dry, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Gently reshape the garment while still wet.
Iron silk on a low temperature (1 dot, max. 110°C), preferably inside out. Use a pressing cloth and light pressure. Iron when the fabric is still very slightly damp, or use a low steam setting at a distance. Do not let water drops fall on the fabric to prevent stains.

If you send it by post, please place the packing slip or a note with your order number in the box: without a return form, processing and refunding may take longer. Remove the old shipping label from the box, or make it completely unreadable, including the barcode. Otherwise DHL may send the parcel back to you. Register your return at gents.nl/retourneren.
