How to wear it
- A bow tie is essential for black tie, but a coloured or patterned bow tie looks equally refined with a blazer — or worn alone with a shirt.
- A bow tie should never be wider than your face: the points end approximately at the outer corners of your eyes.
- For black tie, wear black in the same fabric as your dinner jacket's lapels: silk with silk, grosgrain with grosgrain.
- With white tie (the tailcoat) you wear a white piqué bow tie, never a black one.
- Wear a bow tie with a spread collar or wing collar. With a wing collar, the collar points sit behind the bow tie.

- Tie it yourself: a bow tie that isn't perfectly symmetrical actually looks authentic and stylish.
- Adjust a pre-tied bow tie to your collar size before wearing.
- Pair a bow tie for black tie with a waistcoat or cummerbund to conceal your waistband.
Don'ts
- Avoid a bow tie wider than your face or collar.
- Never wear a bow tie and pocket square in the exact same print.
- No tie clip or chain with a bow tie: those belong with a necktie.
How to tie it
The classic bow tie
It seems complicated, but it's the same knot as your shoelaces. Practice it once around your knee, and you'll master it at your neck.
- Place the bow tie around your neck with the left end approximately 4 cm longer than the right.
- Drape the long end over the short end and pull it up through the loop at your neck from below.
- Fold the short end in half to create a horizontal loop: this becomes the front of your bow tie.
- Let the long end fall straight down over the centre of that loop.
- Fold the long end in half and tuck it behind the front loop through the opening behind the knot.
- Gently pull both loops simultaneously and straighten your bow tie.

Silk: 30°C — Hand wash or use the delicate cycle at 30°C. Use a mild detergent and place it in a laundry bag if using the machine. Wash inside out and not together with heavy fabrics.
Cotton: 40°C — Machine wash at 40°C with similar colours. Use a normal detergent. Avoid bleach, unless the cotton is white.
Linen: 40°C — Wash at 40°C, preferably on a delicate or short cycle. Use a mild detergent and do not overfill the drum. Wash dark shades separately.
Silk: — Do not tumble dry. Air dry, flat or on a hanger, out of direct sunlight. Gently press out water; do not wring.
Cotton: or — May be tumble dried on a low temperature, or air dry to limit shrinkage. Remove from the machine immediately to reduce creasing.
Linen: (short) — Preferably air dry. You may tumble dry briefly on a low temperature to soften. Pull the garment into shape while still damp.

Only when you choose a refund with our DHL return label do you pay € 4,99, the price of that label. If you send it by post, please place the packing slip or a note with your order number in the box: without a return form, processing and refunding may take longer. Remove the old shipping label from the box, or make it completely unreadable, including the barcode. Otherwise DHL may send the parcel back to you. Register your return at gents.nl/retourneren.
- When will my order arrive?
- In Netherlands, your order usually arrives within 1–2 business days. Orders placed on working days before 23:59 are usually dispatched from our warehouse the same day; weekend orders are sent out on Monday.
