What do you wear as a wedding guest?

The short answer

Without a dress code, a well-fitting suit is your best choice: navy, grey, or a warm tone such as green or beige, paired with a white or light blue shirt. A tie makes it more formal. Avoid white and black, and let the groom take centre stage.

A wedding calls for something more than an ordinary workday. Follow the dress code if there is one, otherwise choose a suit that feels festive without drawing attention.

Daytime and Outdoors

Lighter fabrics and shades work for daytime outdoors: sand, light grey, green or light blue. A three-piece suit with waistcoat looks refined; leave the bottom button of the waistcoat undone. With a warm suit, brown shoes are the choice.

Evening or Formal

Evening or Formal

Darker and sharper: navy or charcoal, a white shirt and a necktie. If the invitation says black tie, wear a tuxedo.

The Details

A pocket square, cufflinks with a double cuff and polished shoes complete the look. A T-shirt under a suit has no place at a wedding.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear a black suit as a guest?
You can, but black tends to look severe. Navy, grey, or a warm tone feels more celebratory.
Do I need to wear a tie?
Not always. At a formal wedding, yes; at a daytime outdoor wedding, an open collar with a pocket square can look equally polished.
What if the invitation says morning coat or black tie?
Follow that dress code: a morning coat for a daytime ceremony, a dinner jacket for the evening.
