How to Add Colour to Your Outfits

Zo voeg je kleur toe aan jouw outfits - Gents

Do you prefer wearing outfits in bold colours? Or do you prefer to play it safe and usually opt for blue or grey? Many people find it difficult to combine the right colours and therefore quickly resort to neutral shades like blue and grey. A shame, because adding a touch of colour gives your outfit – and mood! – the perfect boost. No matter how colourful your personality is, with our 5 tips you'll add just the right dose of colour to your outfits. Say it with colour and discover how you can easily combine different colours for a trendy and sophisticated look!

  1. A pop of colour

Unsure which colours suit your outfit? Then choose one colourful item that takes centre stage. For example, pair a striking navy suit with a beige, soft green or pink shirt. Heading to a family dinner? Style an ochre yellow linen shirt with beige or blue trousers. Wear matching loafers underneath and you'll have a casual-chic look in no time.

  1. Combine a maximum of three colours

Want more than one colour in your outfit? An important rule of thumb is to combine a maximum of three colours. Go for items in colours that are close to each other and avoid combining primary or complementary colours. A mix of primary colours – red, yellow and blue – comes across as bold and somewhat cheap. Complementary colours like yellow and purple don't match either and make your outfit feel 'heavy'. A combination of blue, purple and pink or a mix of moss green and orange or brick make your outfit interesting. This way you create a stylish, colourful whole and prevent your outfit from becoming a busy carnival attraction.

  1. Chic in tone-on-tone

Do you dare to wear the same colour from head to toe? With a tone-on-tone outfit you set the right tone. Whether you're heading to the office or a casual get-together: a tone-on-tone look always works! A bonus: you'll look even taller if you choose an outfit in matching colour tones. Make sure the colour tones are close to each other and preferably choose items in different materials. Match a pink polo with an aubergine coloured pair of trousers, or an ice blue jumper with a denim blue chino.

Another option is a monochrome outfit: entirely in black or camel for a timeless, sophisticated look. A pair of beautifully coloured trainers or loafers provide the finishing touch. Which colour tones do you choose: lavender purple, smashing green or chic in brick?

  1. Wear dark on light

Wear dark on light to make different colours in your outfit stand out better. Under a blue blazer, for example, wear a sky blue or trendy mint green shirt. A sand-coloured polo under a black waistcoat gives you a look with classic feel. Remember: neutral colours like black and grey enhance both bright and light colours.

  1. Prints and coloured investment pieces

While basic items like a white shirt, blue blazer and grey trousers are essential in your business wardrobe, investing in a colourful jacket or a shirt with a striking print is also a must. In blue you come across as relaxed and confident, and in yellow or with a playful print you show your creative side. Want a representative appearance during that important meeting? With a stylish blue checked suit or blazer with subtle stripe design, that's a breeze. By Thursday you can already smell the weekend and start planning for Friday night. To keep your creative spirit alive at work, choose a shirt with an inspiring, colourful print. Once it's Friday and the deadlines are done, it's time for the Friday afternoon drinks. Add a pair of trainers with a colour accent and jeans to your print shirt and go with the flow!
