As temperatures drop sharply, our thoughts are already turning to the icy winter ahead. For many people, this season means Sinterklaas celebrations and of course Christmas. We at GENTS are huge Christmas fans. Why? During this period, we all dress up nicely to dine with family. And don't forget the tacky Christmas jumper! It started as a joke once, but nowadays almost all of the Netherlands participates in this American and English phenomenon. We're talking about wearing a tacky Christmas jumper, of course. The magic of this new tradition lies in its simplicity. Anyone can join in. Besides, a jumper is certainly more comfortable than a formal suit when you've eaten a lot after dinner. The only requirement if you want to participate? You need to wear a Christmas jumper that's either completely inappropriate or just plain wrong. And the tackier the jumper, the better!

During the holidays, we typically dress quite formally. This is especially true for Christmas and New Year's Eve. It's not uncommon to receive an invitation to a chic dinner around this time of year. Of course, you'd wear a properly formal suit, such as a tuxedo. At the same time, we also associate Christmas with cosiness and warmth. The underlying idea is forgiveness and love, after all. This is precisely why the tacky Christmas jumper has become so popular in the Netherlands. A jumper is obviously more comfortable when you have to get through yet another five-course dinner. On top of that, a tacky Christmas jumper also comes across as more informal. When you wear such a jumper, you simply seem more convivial.
