Tips for a Successful Mother's Day - Gents

As we grow older and start living our own lives, it's easy to forget to show gratitude to our mothers and fathers. Would you like to make this Mother's Day truly special? Could you use some tips for a successful Mother's Day? We at GENTS are here to tell you today how you can easily organize a wonderful day for your mother, because next weekend is that special Sunday again!

In the Netherlands, we celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May each year. This day is entirely dedicated to motherhood. Children across the country create all sorts of little things to show their mothers that they are truly appreciated. As a child, you certainly did this at school too. At a certain age, we simply stop celebrating Mother's Day properly — it just slips away. However, that doesn't mean your mother will appreciate it any less if you give her some special attention.

Appreciation for mothers

Mother's Day, as we know it today, is not that old. It was only introduced somewhere in the 19th century. A female judge from Philadelphia started the concept of Mother's Day to claim a day that would be entirely dedicated to women. Themes such as pacifism and disarmament were very important at the time. Back then, this day didn't catch on very well. Then, in the early 20th century, it became a success: the day was renamed to a special occasion to express appreciation for mothers. So your mother will certainly still appreciate an extra gesture of appreciation today.

Tips for a successful Mother's Day

Once you're a student or parent yourself, the old gifts for this special occasion no longer work. After all, it's difficult to show up as a 20-year-old with a drawing or homemade item (unless you have impressive graphic skills, of course). However, that doesn't mean it's harder to plan a successful Mother's Day for your dear mum. GENTS believes it's actually easier. So haven't you arranged anything for your mother yet? Here are some handy tips that will certainly make for a successful day!

1. Skip breakfast, enjoy a luxury brunch on Mother's Day

In the Netherlands, it's a tradition in many families to start Mother's Day (or Father's Day) with a little breakfast (in bed). Of course, the whole family takes care of everything except mum after breakfast. When you're older, you're not likely to eat a sandwich in bed at your parents' house. What you can do is organize an adult version of it. For example, plan a luxury brunch with the whole family. This way you can agree on a certain dress code and put together a range of delicious treats on the table. For such a luxury brunch, you'll naturally wear a neat shirt with a stylish gilet. To keep it casual chic, you can then opt for jeans. Going for a truly decadent atmosphere during brunch? Then complete the outfit with a matching pair of trousers. Style tip from GENTS: make sure the trousers match the gilet. Think about fabric, pattern or colour.

2. Pool resources for a gift

In addition to the traditional breakfast, it's also customary to give mothers a present on Mother's Day. That's easy when you're small. As you get older, it can be difficult to come up with something original. GENTS suggests that you pool resources with other family members. Do you have sisters or brothers? Then start a group chat and talk about it. Maybe someone knows that one great thing your mother has secretly wanted for a long time but never gets around to buying. Like a stylish dress or a beautiful women's suit. Additionally, it can also be fun to all chip in some money and give a grand gift. Think, for example, of a weekend away with the family or a city trip especially for mum (and dad).

3. Play into the underlying idea of Mother's Day

As we explained earlier, Mother's Day is entirely about appreciating mothers. When you're not sure what you can do for your mum, it's smart to remember that underlying idea of Mother's Day. It's really all about recognizing and showing appreciation. You don't necessarily have to do this in an extravagant way. Sending a card to be delivered on Mother's Day while you're studying abroad can mean a lot to your mother. You can also dig into your memories. What do you share only with your mother? A love of chocolate, a particular film genre or delicious food? Use that shared interest to show your appreciation on Mother's Day.

In short, for a successful Mother's Day, the underlying idea is what matters most: thank you, mum!
