With this blog, GENTS brings you completely up to speed in just a few minutes. This way, you too can say "I do" in a fashionable yet timeless manner!
A wedding is a one of a kind moment. That's why we try to make this day even more special in all sorts of ways. You can opt for a themed wedding or choose a unique venue. Another simple way to give your wedding that extra touch is to establish a dress code. As a groom, you can make a stylish appearance in a morning coat. This grand classic is a highly formal suit reserved for truly special occasions. Of course, it's all the more delightful when guests appear in a similar suit. Since the morning coat is not as well-known as other formal suits (think tuxedos and tailcoats), you may not know what we're talking about.
This is a morning coat
There are various formal suits for gentlemen. However, not every outfit is suitable for a wedding, and an ordinary suit is sometimes not special enough. That's why the morning coat is experiencing a resurgence as a groom's outfit. What is a morning coat? This is the English name for the jacquet, a highly formal occasion suit for gentlemen that may only be worn during the day. A morning coat, or jacquet, is particularly recognizable by its characteristic long jacket. The front panels of this jacket taper gracefully into long tail panels. Furthermore, the jacquet has only one button. Of course, the formal suit consists of more than just the jacket. When you want to wear this classic on your wedding day, you must ensure that you fully comply with the corresponding etiquette for each garment.
As a gentleman, completely in style
First, you wear a jacquet only after sunrise and until sunset. This means you (like the bride) must wear a different outfit during the dinner and evening festivities. You exchange the morning coat for a second outfit. When you ask guests to also wear a jacquet, it is proper to mention that a second outfit is needed for the evening celebrations. A good option for this is a tuxedo.
Second, under the traditional morning coat you wear a classic jacquet shirt and waistcoat. The white shirt must have double cuffs, a hidden closure, and a spread collar. Additionally, it is customary with a morning coat to wear a plain grey waistcoat. Third, you put on the correct trousers. A morning coat calls for grey trousers without turn-ups. You recognize the traditional jacquet trousers by their thin black stripes. Now you've almost completed the morning coat according to etiquette. Only the accessories are missing.
The accessories for your morning coat outfit
As the finishing touch, you complete your groom outfit with the corresponding accessories. Going for the classic look? Then a grey top hat and suede gloves are essential. Tip from GENTS: do not wear black gloves with your jacquet. Black gloves are worn only in mourning. Since getting married is a festive occasion, you wear grey gloves. With a stylish grey tie and black men's shoes, your morning coat is truly perfect. Now you're ready to say "I do" in a timeless yet fashionable way.
