Smart Casual etiquette

A casual outfit with a chic edge. Lots of freedom, but always neat and thoughtful.

Not every dress code or etiquette is clearly defined. A good example is Smart Casual. This dress code is quite difficult to define. An outfit in line with Smart Casual etiquette is mainly a casual outfit with a chic or ‘smart’ edge. This gives you quite a bit of freedom.

Casual + neat + modern look = the right balance.

So how do you still ensure that your outfit matches the Smart Casual etiquette? Fortunately, there are some concrete guidelines that we are happy to share with you so you don't make a faux pas.

Essentially, Smart Casual as a dress code stands for generally neat, comfortable clothing with a smart twist. You usually encounter this dress code in the workplace or at occasions that are not too formal, such as a first date.

The shirt is especially important for an authentic Smart Casual look.

When putting together a Smart Casual outfit, first choose a nice, elegant shirt.

Depending on the season, you can go for a chino or a slim-cut trouser.

Good choices
  • Modern shirt
  • Chino
  • Slim trousers
  • Good fit
Avoid
  • Jeans
  • Tears
  • Worn-out clothing
  • Too casual appearance
Tip from GENTS
Don't wear jeans. They are usually too casual for Smart Casual.

Blazer or sports jacket as an optional choice

Besides the trousers and shirt, you can optionally wear a blazer or sports jacket. This is not mandatory.

In winter, for example, you can also wear a turtleneck under a blazer.

Accessories according to the Smart Casual etiquette

You don't necessarily have to wear a tie.

Prefer smart men's shoes with a modern look. Sneakers are usually too casual.
