At a wedding, it is customary for the bridal couple and the guests to appear in stylish clothing. To ensure that everyone adheres to this, a dress code is usually included on the invitation. We at GENTS have noticed that a royal classic has been rediscovered: the morning coat for the groom is back in full swing! With this blog, GENTS brings you fully up to date within a few minutes. This way, you too can give your vows fashionably and at the same time classically!

A wedding is a one of a kind moment. That is why we try in many ways to make this day even more special. For example, you can go for a themed wedding or choose a unique location. Another simple way to give your wedding that extra touch is by applying a dress code. As a groom, you can stylishly appear in a morning coat. This royal classic is a very formal suit reserved for truly special occasions. Of course, it is then nice that the guests appear in a similar suit. Since the morning coat is not as well known as other formal suits (think of tuxedos and tailcoats), you might not know what we are talking about.

This is a morning coat

There are various formal suits for men. However, not every outfit is suitable for a wedding, and a regular suit is sometimes not special enough. That is why the morning coat seems to be making a comeback as a groom outfit. What is a morning coat? This is the English name for the tailcoat, a very formal occasion suit for men that may only be worn during the day. A morning coat or tailcoat is especially recognizable by the characteristic long coat. The front panels of this jacket curve into long back panels. Furthermore, the tailcoat has only one button. Of course, the formal suit consists of more than just the jacket. If you want to wear this classic on your wedding day, you must ensure that you fully comply with the corresponding etiquette per garment.

As gentlemen completely in style

First, you only wear a tailcoat after sunrise and until sunset. Therefore, you must (just like the bride) wear a different outfit during dinner and the evening party. So you change the morning coat for a second outfit. When you ask the guests if they will also appear in tailcoat, it is polite to mention that a second outfit is needed for the evening festivities. A good option for this is a tuxedo.

Secondly, under the traditional morning coat, you wear a classic tailcoat shirt and vest. The white shirt must have double cuffs, a concealed placket, and a spread collar. In addition, it is customary with a morning coat to wear a plain gray vest to wear. Thirdly, you put on the right trousers. A morning coat goes with gray trousers without cuffs. You recognize the traditional tailcoat trousers to the thin black stripes. Now you almost have the morning coat complete according to etiquette. Only the accessories are still missing.

The accessories for your morning coat outfit

As the cherry on top, complete your groom outfit with the matching accessories. Are you going for the classic look? Then the gray top hat and suede gloves must not be missing. Tip from GENTS: do not wear black gloves with your tailcoat. Black gloves are only worn in mourning. Since getting married is a festive occasion, you wear gray gloves. With a stylish gray tie and black men's shoes is your morning coat really perfect. Now you are ready to say yes in a classic yet fashionable way.
