An invitation to a wedding arrives in the mail. The date is set, the location is known, and the dress code is mentioned. Or not, which makes choosing your outfit as a wedding guest much more difficult. You want to appear stylish and be appropriately dressed for the occasion. Not too formal, but certainly not too casual either. The role you have at the party is decisive here. Are you a good friend of the bridal couple, family, or a colleague of the groom? At GENTS, we are happy to help you make the right choice. In this blog, we share useful tips so that you appear perfectly dressed at the party.

Dress codes and themes

Every wedding has a unique atmosphere and style, often enhanced by a dress code. With the rise of themes such as Scandinavian chic, bohemian chic, or a beach wedding, the outfit possibilities are endless. We give you some outfit ideas in advance:

  • Scandinavian chic: Sleek, minimalist, and stylish. Think of a slim fit suit in soft gray tones with a subtle pattern. Combine with a fine-knit turtleneck or a classic white shirt for a modern appearance.

  • Bohemian chic: A wedding in the middle of nature calls for a light and playful look. Choose a sand-colored suit, a linen shirt and add a floral or paisley print accessory for a casual touch.

  • Beach wedding: At the beach, everything is about comfort and light materials. A linen-look suit in beige or pastel blue with suede slip-ons is a perfect choice. No suits in heavy fabrics or dark shades, choose a breezy and relaxed look.

  • Castle wedding: For a wedding in a classic setting such as a castle or manor house, tenue de ville is the right choice. A dark blue or anthracite suit with a white shirt and neat lace-up shoes contributes to a timeless and chic look.

Unwritten rules for wedding guests

Besides the dress code, there are also some unwritten rules to keep in mind. These small details make a big difference in how stylish you come across.

  • Choose a pocket square or a tie: Wear these accessories not both. This prevents an excess of accessories and ensures a balanced look.

  • Do not appear overdressed: The bride and groom should be the stars of the party. Keep your look stylish but not overly flashy.

  • Do not wear a completely black suit if no dress code is specified. Black is often associated with formal and somber occasions, while a wedding is a festive day.

What if there is no dress code?

No dress code on the invitation? No worries, at GENTS we have a wide collection of stylish suits that will always make you look good. A pastel blue or light green suit is a safe choice for a summer wedding. For those who want to stand out a bit more without overdoing it, there are subtle stripe or check patterns that give your outfit that little extra. Prefer to wear your blazer open? Then combine it with a chino with a shirt and smart shoes for a smart-casual look that is still presentable.
