Although summer has not officially started yet, developments of the trends for this season are already in full swing. GENTS is, of course, on top of every new trend that emerges. Do you want to keep up with the trends for menswear this summer but don’t quite know how? GENTS is here to help! Today we first briefly discuss the general trends coming this summer. Then we zoom in on a remarkable style that attracts all the attention, namely the neo-dandy look.
General menswear summer trends 2019
It is now clear that this summer there will be a division between formal clothing that you wear, for example, at work and casual clothing for leisure time. It is also remarkable that the '90s and '80s are making a comeback among various target groups. GENTS notices that young people prefer the style from the '90s, while the taste of slightly older men mainly corresponds with the '80s. By the way, combinations of these styles are also very welcome in the summer of 2019. It is striking that street style menswear mainly steals the spotlight. Dandyism is back in a new form: the neo-dandy look!
Street style menswear and neo-dandy
Neo-dandy is a look that originated on the street. Therefore, this style also belongs to street style menswear. You might not expect the combination of menswear and street style, but among other things, due to series like Peaky Blinders there is renewed interest in this branch of men’s fashion. For example, during the Men’s Fashion Weeks already noticed that the fashion style of dandyism is more often seen on the streets. Because the style ‘dandy’ is actually quite old (it has existed for centuries!), the style of the new dandies is therefore called ‘neo-dandy’.
Why dandyism?
Now you might wonder why such an age-old style is suddenly seen on the streets again. To answer this, you need to be familiar with the idea behind dandyism. GENTS has all the knowledge in-house and is happy to explain what dandyism is and why it is being revived this summer. The first thing you need to know is that dandyism is often associated with vanity and peacocking, or cockiness. The dandy style is all about yourself. You use your clothes as a form of self-expression. That is why quality, fit, and especially the tailoring important.
But that is not all. By dressing in the dandy style, you also make a statement. Dandyism originally emerged as a cultural movement. By wearing refined and distinctive outfits, the contrast with the then prevailing uniformity and mediocrity became painfully large. You could say that the dandy look originated as an ironic protest against the then prevailing society. This underlying idea of dandyism forms the basis for neo-dandy.
The neo-dandy look
If you are not familiar with dandyism, you can never achieve a true neo-dandy look. There is a very fine line between stylish dressing up and kitschy overdressingTo create the neo-dandy look, a neo-dandy must have a certain style and class. This way, you never leave the house looking unkempt. Everything about you is tiptop in order. Perfectly fitting clothing is also very important. Want a neo-dandy look? Then a tailored suit is actually a requirement. Unfortunately, that can be quite expensive, but GENTS has the solution! At our location, we can alter and adjust suits so they fit better.
Besides clothing with perfect tailoring there are a number of other clothing items required for a true neo-dandy. With the following extravagant items, you as a neo-dandy can get through this summer:
- Waistcoats (wear under a blazer or loose);
- Quality shirts;
- Shawls;
- Blazers and jackets (in striking colors or with bold prints);
- Modern shoes;
- Vintage accessories for a neo-dandy touch (such as braces, tie clips or lapel pins);
- Eccentric items to complete the outfit (a ring, walking stick, or hat).
Originality and a distinctive taste
Do you find it difficult to judge what fits a neo-dandy look and what doesn’t? Then it’s good to remember what dandyism is about: originality combined with a distinctive taste. In fact, anything that deviates from the prevailing norm is already interesting for you as a neo-dandy. The advice from GENTS is therefore: develop your unique clothing style. Above all, dare to try and combine. This summer, you may let the neo-dandy in you run free!
