Which colour tie do you wear with which colour suit?

Matching the right colour tie with shirt and suit can sometimes be tricky. Which colour tie suits a grey suit best, and how do you combine ties with different patterns with your favourite suit? We give you 6 tips, so you can immediately choose the perfect combination for a celebration or another day at the office.

1.   Choose the right patterns

Patterns on your shirt or suit are always nice, but make sure it becomes a stylish whole. Go for a plain-on-pattern combination, one of the easiest options. Here you combine a plain blue tie with a trendy printed shirt. Match the colours of both the shirt and the tie to the occasion. For a party or gathering, wear a shirt or tie in warm colours such as yellow, cognac, or earth brown. Do you have an important meeting? Then go for a calm look and choose cooler shades like blue or soft green.

2.   Plain tie with plain shirt

Are you a fan of a classic look? Then the combination of a plain coloured tie and plain shirt is a perfect choice. For example, a soft pink shirt with a pink or purple plain tie. Want to add a bit more flair to your look? Then add a beautiful tie with a subtle dotted pattern for a balanced look.

3.   Monochromatic colour combinations

To appear stylish and refined, choose monochromatic colour combinations. An easy-to-achieve look suitable for every setting. Do you like to wear a plain light blue shirt? Make sure you choose a navy blue tie. The contrasting blue gives your shirt a fresh accent. A neat combination for your meeting or a wedding. Is a fancy dinner planned in your agenda? Then take your finest suit in midnight blue or anthracite grey out of the closet. Swap your dark blue tie for a burgundy one and style it with a soft pink shirt.

4.   Analogous colour combinations

Do you go for a somewhat exuberant style? Step out of your comfort zone and experiment with your favourite colours. For example, combine a purple tie with a blue shirt or a pink shirt with a purple or brown tie. These analogous colour combinations are easy to put together. A neat appearance, but with a wow effect.

5.   Width of the tie

Besides patterns and colours, it is important to pay attention to the width of your tie when choosing your suit. A wide tie looks good with a jacket with wide lapels. And a trendy narrow tie combines well with a slim fit jacket with narrow lapels.

6.   Determine the impression

Finally, it is important to match your look to the goal you want to achieve. Do you want a powerful or a more elegant impression? Decide what you want your outfit to express. A strong colour contrast creates a powerful look: a dark suit with a light shirt and tie with a prominent colour makes an impact. You achieve an elegant style with low contrasts in your outfit. Style a light suit with a light shirt and add a tie in a complementary colour for the final touch.
