For formal men's fashion, there are various etiquettes you must adhere to. Which etiquette applies depends on the dress code. If the invitation for a party mentions ‘cravate noire’, ‘tuxedo’, or ‘esmoquin’, then you are expected to dress according to the black tie dress code. GENTS explains today what the black tie dress code is, which etiquette applies, and what you should or should not wear. In short, this is what you wear for a black tie dress code!

There are rules for clothing in general, but also for specific outfits there can be a dress code. This is mainly the case at formal parties. Suppose you are invited to a gala, a wedding, or a conference. Then there is a chance that a dress code is mentioned. For both men and women, the following apply specific etiquette that the outfit must comply with. Generally, the black tie dress code is prescribed for events with a formal atmosphere that take place after six o'clock in the evening. But what is black tie?

The black tie dress code

For gentlemen, the etiquette of a black tie event is different than for women. Therefore, we will first discuss the black tie dress code for men. Then we will also discuss what women wear according to this etiquette.

Men

As a man, you are expected to appear in a tuxedo. In other words, it is not accepted to wear a black suit. No, you must wear a tuxedo. Moreover, that tuxedo must comply with very specific etiquette that applies to the black tie dress code. The formal suit usually consists of at least two, maximum three pieces. First, there is the tuxedo jacket, also known as the dinner jacket. You recognize this jacket by the characteristic collar. Under the dinner jacket, you naturally wear a shirt, but not just any shirt. Preferably, you appear in a shirt with a father killer collar complete with iconic bow tie. Of course, you wear this with a neat tuxedo trouser. Complete the outfit by wearing black patent leather shoes.

Women

Unlike men, women have a bit more choice for an outfit that aligns with the black tie dress code. Almost every long cocktail dress or evening gown is accepted. The only caveat is that the garment must have a chic appearance. Preference goes to calm colors. Avoid busy prints and bright colors. It is better to appear in a dark blue or black evening gown. Find that too boring? Then consider burgundy or deep purple. Furthermore, it is important to keep the following points in mind when putting together your outfit:

  • Always wear matching tights;
  • Wear neat pumps;
  • Avoid bold jewelry (keep it subtle);
  • Bring a small clutch as a handbag.

What should you not wear at black tie?

Making a mistake is human, but if you wear an outfit that does not fit the etiquette, then you commit a faux pas. That is a violation of the dress code. There are certain things you absolutely must not wear at a black tie event. First of all, it is forbidden to wear a watch. "Good times know no time," is the underlying idea. By wearing a watch with your tuxedo or evening gown, you commit a faux pas.

In addition, there are a few violations that mainly women can make. The freedom of choice in the black tie dress code for women therefore has both advantages and disadvantages. For example, never wear sneakers under your dress (even if your dress is so long that you actually can't see the shoes). Also, it is not intended that you wear a dress with a low neckline. Your décolleté may be visible, but in a tasteful way. This dress code is all about refinement and a stylish appearance. Fortunately, thanks to GENTS, you are now fully informed and will effortlessly steal the show at your next black tie event!
