Anyone who scrolls on TikTok has undoubtedly seen the trend: young men dressed sharply in suits going to the cinema for the new movie Minions: The Rise of Gru. Going to the movies with a tie and all sounds like a trend where GENTS – as a specialist in suits  preferably behind it. But unfortunately, this new trend is already causing problems in various cinemas. What exactly is the new TikTok trend #GentleMinions?

Almost everyone is familiar with the cheerful yellow faces from the animated film Despicable Me. The Minions, as these yellow little guys are called, have been appearing worldwide on the big screen since 2010. The newest film starring the Minions is The Rise of Gru, the movie this whole hype revolves around. The trend started with one TikTok video among the hashtag GentleMinions. In this you see Gen-Zers, the generation that grew up with the Minions films, going to this movie in formal clothing. Often with a banana as an accessory, referring to the Minions' favorite snack. Soon the TikTok video was picked up by other young people who copied the video, and since then #GentleMinions viral.

Why you are no longer allowed to wear a suit to some cinemas because of this trend

The GentleMinions trend started in England, where several cinemas are now taking measures against the trend. For example, in some British cinemas it is now forbidden to go to the movies in formal clothing. The reason is that so many young people are going to the new animated film that other visitors are disturbed. These are often not quiet cinema visits: Gen-Zers come in large groups and cheer, jump, and shout to show their enthusiasm for the new film. The ban on the trend is therefore not so much about the suit the young people wear, but about the nuisance caused by the GentleMinions trend.
